Dental Checkup and Teeth Cleaning Balwyn

Closeup of woman smiling with clean white teeth

We believe strongly in prevention. Successful preventative care requires a broad range of protocols and dental treatments, which we implement in our regular dental check ups. To help us deliver the best possible treatment, we have a robust, dedicated hygiene department to keep teeth clean and give advice on home care and diet.

We can offer fluoride treatments, tooth fillings, and fissure sealants on children to help protect teeth and prevent decay. We also take regular X-rays to detect any issues that may be developing out of sight, so they can be treated early.

What to Expect During a Dental Check-Up Appointment

Dental Exam

During your dental check-up, Dr Rostkier will perform a thorough oral examination to assess the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth. This includes looking for signs of decay, checking gum health, and screening for oral cancer. Depending on your specific needs and oral health history, X-rays might be taken to identify issues not visible during the visual examination, such as hidden decay or bone loss.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

The check-up also includes a professional cleaning conducted by a dental hygienist. This cleaning involves the removal of plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. If there is significant tartar, especially below the gum line, the hygienist may perform scaling to deeply clean the gum pockets, helping to maintain healthy gums.

We may recommend a dental fluoride treatment after your cleaning. A dental fluoride treatment strengthens the enamel on your teeth and can help to protect against cavities and decay. This treatment is applied directly to your teeth and is painless.

Why Dental Checkups and Teeth Cleaning are Important

Prevention of Dental Diseases

Regular check-ups allow us to catch problems like tooth decay and gum disease early on when they’re easier and less expensive to treat. Ignoring these issues can lead to pain, broken teeth, tooth loss, and more invasive treatments later.

Maintaining Overall Health

By maintaining regular dental appointments, you’re investing in preventive care, which is far more cost-effective than treating problems after they’ve developed. Regular cleanings and check-ups can save you from expensive procedures in the future. Plus, who doesn't love a bright, white smile?

Signs That You Need Professional Cleaning

  • If your gums bleed during brushing or flossing, it’s a sign of inflammation and possible gum disease.
  • Persistent bad breath can indicate bacteria buildup on your teeth and gums.
  • If you notice a hard, yellow or brown deposit between your teeth or at the gum line, it’s time for a cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

External factors such as foods, drinks, smoking, and poor oral hygiene can contribute to staining the outer layer of your teeth.

Internal factors such as genetics, medications, or trauma can cause changes within the structure of the teeth, leading to deeper discolouration.

Most people need a six-monthly check-up and clean for maintaining good oral health. However, if you have a history of dental issues like gum disease, we may suggest more frequent visits.

You should brush your teeth twice a day; after breakfast and before bed.

Flossing is only necessary once a day.

Gums often bleed as a result of inflammation caused by bacteria. Our dentist or hygienist can assess your situation and advise you on a range of simple ways to improve your cleaning and prevent gum bleeding.

Teeth cleaning is usually a pain-free process and most of our patients find it reasonably comfortable. If you have especially sensitive gums or teeth, you might feel a bit of temporary discomfort at certain points. We take every step to ensure your comfort, and we can apply a topical anaesthetic to help ease any sensitivity during the procedure. If you have any concerns about discomfort, please let us know before we begin.
