What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth to save and strengthen it. They sit over the tooth’s core, taking the place of the natural crown - that is, the part of the tooth that can be seen above the gums. Crowns are covered in layer porcelain to mask the repair and match your existing teeth colour.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

  • Porcelain crowns are a popular choice for restoring damaged or missing teeth due to their natural appearance and durability.
  • Crowns support and protect teeth that are weak, broken, or have large fillings for a strong and functional smile.
  • They are also perfect for completing a dental implant, providing a durable and attractive top for this tooth replacement option.

When We Recommend a Crown

  • If your tooth is cracked, worn down, or significantly damaged.
  • After a root canal, to protect the restored tooth.
  • When there’s more filling than tooth.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and false tooth(s) in between. Our dental bridges are made from high-quality porcelain - porcelain being preferred to blend seamlessly with surrounding natural teeth.

Advantages of Dental Bridges

  • Bridges help restore your smile, your ability to chew and speak, and maintain the shape of your face.
  • They reduce bite stress and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting, which can cause jaw pain and bite issues.

When We Recommend a Bridge

  • If you’re missing one or more teeth and have gaps that affect your chewing and smile.
  • To prevent adjacent teeth from moving into the gap, which can lead to further dental issues.
  • An alternative to dental bridges is to replace the missing teeth with dental implants. You can read more about dental implants here.

Why Choose Dr. Steven Rostkier for Your Dental Crowns and Bridges

Our dental team provides all forms of crowns, utilising the latest technology and materials, including Cad-Cam and 21st century ceramics (porcelains) to provide outstanding outcomes. Each patient is carefully assessed to select the best fit for both aesthetics and strength. Our crowns are engineered to exacting standards by local Australian dental laboratories.

The Dental Implant Process at Dr Rostkier

1
The crown procedure commences with a local anaesthetic so you don't experience pain or discomfort. Then, we take an impression of your tooth using our cutting-edge, digital intraoral scanner.
2
This information is then sent to a state-of-the-art lab where a technician will make the crown to fit your tooth and match your surrounding teeth. A temporary crown may be fitted during the interim to allow for normal eating and smiling.
3
In a subsequent appointment, we will then fit the permanent crown to your tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental crowns cover and restore single damaged teeth, while bridges replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent teeth or implants. Crowns are for individual teeth, and bridges are for filling gaps left by missing teeth.

Dental crowns typically last between 10 to 15 years, but with proper care, they can last even longer—sometimes up to 20 or 30 years. Regular check-ups and good oral health and hygiene are a must to extend the life of your crowns and bridges. Avoid hard foods and don't use your teeth as tools (ie don’t try and open a stuck bottle lid with your teeth!) to keep your restorations intact.

Getting a bridge or a crown is generally not painful. The procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, which numbs the area being treated. You might feel some pressure or mild discomfort during the process, but not pain.

After the procedure, there could be some sensitivity or soreness, which usually subsides within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. We take steps to make the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Implants have a significantly higher success rate compared to bridges. But there are certain situations when dental bridge can be better than an implant:

  • When several teeth in a row are missing, a bridge can replace multiple teeth without requiring individual implants for each missing tooth.
  • If a patient has insufficient jawbone density or volume, a bridge might be a better option since implants require a strong bone structure for support.
  • Certain medical conditions or medications may make dental implants risky. In such cases, a bridge could be a safer option.

There is no difference between a tooth cap and a crown; they are simply two terms for the same dental restoration. Both refer to a cover placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. "Crown" is the more commonly used term in professional settings, while "cap" is sometimes used by the general public.

The main difference is the area they cover on the tooth. Onlays cover a part of a tooth, while crowns cover the whole tooth above the gum line. Crowns are typically used for more severe cavities or decay.

Crowns are used to repair or replace defective or missing teeth. This may be caused by trauma, decay, root canal treatment or simply for aesthetic reasons.
